Planning: Checking & Blogging

Here are a few pics of me checking over my blog and seeing if there needs any adjustments and so on. This will help me write a reflective blog and see what I need to improve on what I need to do to make my blog post evaluative and informative towards our music video.

Production: V log on progress after 1st filming session

Planning: Target audience Interview: Analysis of Artists

Filming: Reflecting back on first day of filming

Our first day of filming our remake music video went  smoothly. Our group were lucky that the weather began to clear up, which meant we were left with a good amount of time to complete one location shoot.
As according to plan, Nabilla our artist wore a bohemian style outfit with an edgy look, which consisted of her wearing a full length maxi skirt, a knitted jumper and leather jacket.

Our filming didn't take no less than 2 hours to film, I expect we will get better with time in each location as it took some time setting the camera up, and for our artist to get into character. Firstly, we began filming with our artists against a brick wall, with her singing the entire song. As part of our equipment, we were introduced to using a speaker which played our song on full volume, so that it will be easier to edit and the lip syncing will match the song. Our first shoot against the brick wall went relatively easy, each member of our group performed vital tasks.

Our second shoot, was using the camera in a hand held style following Nabilla J swirl around the lamp post, being ditzy and having a fun time. We played the full length of the song from YouTube  which meant our artist had to stay in character for almost 4 minutes each time we began filming. Our third shoot, was quickly taking some footage of the Paget St road sign, which we felt would be a good idea to put in our music video also.

While filming, our group faced difficulties in terms of the battery power being used up. Despite being given a spare battery, once inserted that was also low. When filming again, I will make sure both battery packs that are given to us have been charged and ready to use.

PRODUCTION: DAY ONE: PAGENT STREET

Day one of filming was a total success! We managed to get to the location on time and had enough time to film. The costume selection for the day was brilliant, since Nabilla J was not cold (it was a mysteriously warm day in Britain). We finished filming within in 2 hours and filmed all that we planned to. The only fault we had was one of our batteries died mid way of filming - but luckily, we weren't too far from college so we just quickly ran back and collected another battery. We are happy with our filming so far and hope this good vibe continues throughout the whole process.

Planning: Updated to do list

In comparison to the previous to do-list, this needs to be done to support my overal blog. I decided that the target audience interview is VITAL as we need to get real life potential target audience and ask them about they look or within an indie-pop artist and how they relate to the fans. This will help me in marketing Nabilla J properly and successfully.

Planning: 2nd idea Input in Music video

As we wanted to include as much animation as possible, we decided to also include using post it notes as part of our animation and as well as using it as part of our base track. We thought that using at least one interior location as a base track will give the music video a nice contrast. On the post it notes, we will draw different emotion faces, and some words from the lyrics. This base track links with our amplification from the lyrics to the post it notes. The post it notes represents Nabilla J's consciousnesses and inner feelings, which is bursting with contrasting emotions which she feels for her boyfriends -who she loves and hates. However, we are still currently deciding whether it is our final decision to put the post it notes animation in our music video. I will show you some examples later on and then come to a decision.

Planning: Using Flower blossoming permission!

As we got this idea from YouTube and it belongs to someone else, we have to ask permission to use this video just to make sure that we do not cause any inconvenience upon ourselves and our group. This video is from a German user, as stated in the bio. So, to ask permission, we have decided to contact the user by commenting on the video link. Before I asked permission, I translated my question on Bing translator so that I will be able to communicate with the user. If the user does not reply, then we will go ahead and use the video. Here is the process I undertook to ask permission:

Planning: FLOWER Blossoming Idea

We had the idea of including a rose growing, as we have been experiencing some problems with framing the image of a picture of a couple holding hands as our teacher said the image was not fully portrayed.  We like the fact that Rose symbolising love and passion, and the fact that it is growing, It could symbolise Nabilla J growing within herself and becoming a better person after learning from her mistakes. This will also relate with our target audience as they may also experience the same problem due to their age group (16-24).

Planning: New input in music video

We have decided as a group that we will not use green screen, but instead film a rose blossoming on the projector because when we tried to film Nabilla J in from of the couple holding hands picture, It did not look right and the picture was not seen. So therefore, we believe that filming this rose will provide an amplified meaning - that Nabilla J will remain strong and will over come her problems with her ex and 'blossom' as a person

Planning: Kate Nash Facebook Update

I thought It would be a good idea to check up on what Kate Nash has been up to, seeing as we are doing a cover of her song. So I typed her name on Facebook 'search'

And found this

Here, it shows that she has previously opened a casting call to her fans to give the opportunity for her fans to be in her music video which I think is a perfect way to create a strong fan base. She is inviting any of her target audience (fans) to watch the first screening of her new music video 'FRI-END'. Seeming as it is Halloween soon, this will be a perfect opportunity to gather her fans around to enjoy another creation from Kate Nash and her team. It's almost like a 'thank you' for her fans in supporting her music. this has given me the idea to create something similar for Nabilla J's target audience.

Planning: Kate Nash Interview

                                                      http://www.spin.com/articles/studio-kate-nash

This link is Kate Nash's interview for SPIN magazine. This interview was conducting when she was in her early stages of fame. She also talks about her inspirations, favorite travel destinations and being a singer/song writer. This interview helps to connect Kate Nash and the target audience so that they will have a better understanding of her. This has given me the idea so construct a similar interview when we start creating our Digi packs, as it is also comes under promotion.

Planning: Half term/Early November Plans

So, as you will know, the dates are set and we are ready to film. Despite doing our filming for Nabilla J's music video, we also want to interview her about how the filming is coming along. Usually, artists do behind-the-scene footage to create a rapport with the audience and for them so see another side to the artist despite him/her performing. We believe this will be a perfect way to create an up coming artist and to get to know them better. Nabilla J's target audience would love to see another side to her despite her quirky fashion and controversial lyrics.  Here are some backstage music videos that we wish to inherit.

Planning: Target Audience - A day with Shancie

So I was browsing around the web and I thought I would blog about a day in a life of our target audience. YouTube was the best option to find out some video diaries of Nabilla J's target audience. Here is a video of Shancie who is on her way to New York, with her boyfriend. I think she fits our target audience because of her love for travelling, sense of humor and fashion. Nabilla J's cover of 'Foundations' is  humorous as she is bad mouthing her ex, so this will relate with Shancie.

Planning: Travel and Weather forcast App

When we are planning: our journey, we want to make sure that everything is organised. One thing Is to check our travel and weather forecast in advanced to minimize problems that may occur. The app enables us to check if any major road works will happen and also the forcast for the next 5 daysThe app is available on all android phones

Planning: How to get to our filming locations

Below are a couple of images of how to get to our filming destinations from college:

As we said in our risk assessment if we are unable to film in Regents Park or the Hummingbird bakery then we must choose back up locations, below are a set of location images on the directions from college to our back up locations:

Planning: Green Screen & Camera work Practice

In this session, we focused on how to position the camera in order to create effective frames of Nabilla J. We also re -capped in how to use to camera, so that when we do start filming, we will instantly know what to do. The session helped us to re cover on any things we did not fully understand in order to create a welle established and edited music video, so that it is appeal-able towards our target audience.

Planning: Test shots

This is the test shots/filming of us filming in the green screen. We filmed in the green screen then uploaded it onto Final Cut Pro and then we edited the green out of it and added our image. this is just a rough draft of what we plan to do.

Planning: Green Screen Pictures Update

After realising that the pictures of guys in the background would not work, we have decided to put couples holding hands, as we believe it relates more with the lyrics and amplifies the meaning behind it.  As we are creating a music video which is disjuncture/amplification the Corus goes:

My finger tips are holding on the  cracks in our foundation
And I know that I should let go but I can't
And every time we fight I know its not right, every time that your upset and I smile
I know I should forget but I can't

Planning: Blog Feedback

Here is my media teachers comment on my blog posts so far. It was a very positive comment, which means I will carry on blogging about target audience, Nabilla J and how certain elements will help us produce our music video e.g special  effects, animation etc.

Planning: Blog feedback

In our previous media lesson, our teacher gave us some helpful feedback about our blogs. The main things he said were:

  • more blogs relating to your actual target audience/artist
  • more blogs relating to the practical side of making our music video
  • more blogs about inspiration you have outside of media lessons
Overall, he said our blog was good and we are working well; we just need to follow his targets for us and we can achieve greatness!

Planning: Editing Practice (Green Screen)

In this session, we began practicing editing on green screen which is all new to us. We had a teacher to help us out wit it, and he gave us great tips in how to create a professional green screen without the fuzzy bits by altering the colour settings. This is the only help we need as it was our first time using green screen.

Planning: Music Video Introduction Idea

I have been thinking long and hard about the structure of our music video. I wanted our music not to look typical and something that has been seen before -so I browsed few more video that will also influence our music video in terms of edits, mise-en.scene etc. I came across my favorite artist Michael Jackson's 'Jam' music video. This song came out in 1992 and was part of the 'Dangerous' movie package. I used to watch this music video a million times when I was a child. I still admire the way in which it introduces him, by zooming past the setting for about 1 minute, just the build up the tension rather than just showing him instantly. Here is an example of what I mean.  I think our target audience would admire this technique too because it exposes the locations and settings (which sets the theme of the music video) and will keep the target audience watching. Please watch from 0:20- 1:00. If you really like the song, you can watch it all!

Planning: Storyboard

Planning: Reflection of progress

Here is Natalie and Nabilla talking a little bit about our progress and what is to come.

Planning: Green Screen pictures

Here are two images of boys who will be projected on the green screen for our music video, with our artist Nabilla J, dancing and singing in front of it. We have decided to use both pictures, with our artist complaining on her relationships with both of the boys.

Planning: Production schedule upgrade

The marker on the calender shows that we cannot film on the green screen on this day because we will be in our half term, and therefore we wont be able to access the collage facilities  Instead on this day we will film the locations (which were Brick Lane and Regents park) on the 3rd, 4th so that on the 6th, we will film on the green screen, as on this day we will be back from the half term.

Planning: Budgeting

We are weeks away from starting to shoot our music video, and I realized there was one thing I didn't blog about. Budgeting. Budgeting is so important as in can make or break a music video, if used correctly. As we are only A2 students, we wont have millions of pounds to even consider in putting that kind of money into our music video. Before I begin talking about our budgeting, I will briefly analyse an international successful music video of my choice, which I think links with the theme of our music video in terms of locations but the budgeting is enormously different.

Here is one of my favorite music videos of ALL time 'Beat It', and of course, my lifetime favorite artist, Michael Jackson.

Here is a screen garb of the production cost information.
As you have seen, the music video uses a bar, and an underground warehouse to shoot the video. This refelcts our music video in a way, as we also choose basic yet striking locations to film our music video.

Ok, so taking all of that excitement away for a minute, our budget for our music video will be nowhere near $150,000 because we will not be making profit  out of the music video. However, we will be making some purchase of the props we will be using. All the costume worn by Nabilla J will be her own, so that it gives a personal touch to the complete look rather than buy outfits that will not relate with the artist. This will strongly show to the audience for example, artists such as Paloma Faith style themselves, and thats why they are so popular amongst individual with a distinctive sense of style. So, going back to the budgeting topic, here is a really short list of the purchases we will obtain:

 1 pack of Lemons - 89p

Cupcakes from Hummingbird Bakery (3): £3.50

                                                    or

Cupcakes from  Cost cutters: £1.50 approx

Total amount: £4.39 (£2.39 back up)

Planning: Test Shot of New River Walk

This location visited will vastly relate to our target audience because they like exploring and visiting locations that will be memorable  and embrace the outside world. This video clearly represents this, so therefore by filming this location for our music video, it will be attractive towards the targeted audience and therefore allow Nabilla J to be popular due to her relating well with the target and sharing the same interests.

Planning: Costume for Nabilla J (Artist)

These outfits I have chosen to wear during the shoot will reflect strongly in the ways are target audience would dress. As you can see, the  outfits are really quirky, old school and creative which highlights the dress sense the artist has. Each outfit is unique and will suit where we will film e.g the 1st out fit will be shot in Paget street ( the vintage street) as the corresponds the edgy style with the edgy location. If Nabilla J mirrors the target audience dress sense, then the target audience are more lily to be interested and become fans.

Planning: Offical Production Schedule & Loactions

Planning: Target audience on Youtube

Here is a fan made video for Kate Nash's song 'Mouthwash'. The girls in this video, I think, fit the targeted audience for our artist and music video. They portray a fun and bubbly characteristic, with a sense of humor and a love for music. They also seem like the typical 'local' girls, the ones you will most likely to see again. This is important as we want our artist to be 'relate able' with our target audience, and seem like 'the girl next door'. If this is achieved, then our new artist will be very popular amongst our targeted audience(17-24)

This girl looks as if shes 20 and has a musical background. By watching the video, I can tell she loves playing the piano and has a strong interest in being different, because of her red hair. Is she sees that our artist( Nabila J) also has a strong interest in fashion and music, she will be intrigued and will become a fan of the artist and her music. These traits are perfect for the type of audience we want to target as this reflects the traits of our artist.

Planning: Performer

Here is a photo taken of the brand new artist Nabilla J

Planning: Poster of new indie pop artist Nabilla J

Planning: Potential performers

This is one of our potential performer ( who is also a member of group 6). She has a strong interest in Indie music and also a strong sense in fashion. Her hobbies include socializing with friends and being out and about. She enjoys camping , and exploring rural parts of England. She lives in Leyton with her mum. Her favorite artists are Kate Nash, Beyonce, Lilly Allen and VV Brown.  She thinks she should be the performer because she can relate with Kate Nash's lyrics and can show a particular character towards the audience that is humorous and down-to-earth.

Here is our second potential performer.  She loves acting, socializing with friends and exploring the world. She doesn't have a favorite music artist but instead enjoys various types of music from pop, to K pop to R'nB. She loves it when a song reflects her feelings, Her style is influenced by other people and she tends to take on the 'quirky -sophisticated ' look. She lives in Islington and is from a large a large family. Her ambitions is to become a famous journalist and actress.

Planning: Kate Nash fan blog update

I have yet to receive an answer to the creator of the fan blog dedicated to Kate Nash. I believe that she has chosen to not answer my question (which I have demonstrated in the previous blog). So there fore I will analysis the blog dedicated to her. If you follow the link, you will find posts of recent updates of Kate Nash in terms of fashion and new music. The layout of the blog is very sophisticated and uses soft pink to define the posts. The blog has a sketchy  theme to it, almost like a diary. This will relate with Nabilla J's fan base, as they have a love for creativity, and a diary is part of their creativity.

Planning: Common shots used in Kate Nash Video

In the music video 'foundations' I noticed that there is alot of close up, medium shots and wide shots used. This may be to introduce the Kate Nash as she it was her first ever music video that went international, so the use of close ups and medium shots was to highlight that Kate Nash was a new artist. If we use the same method on our new artist Nabilla J, then we will be able to achieve the introduction to Nabilla J and to create a connection with the audience, the same way in which we make friends. Our looks and costume is the main element that allows us to be judged by others, sometimes even without thinking. As our target audience will dress distinctively and quirky (the same as Nabilla J) then the connection will be created and the target audience will be fond of Nabilla J.

Planning: Kate Nash defends new punk sound

I found this article, where Kate Nash defends her 'new image' stating that she is still the same person, but wanted to try something new in terms of her indie genre. I think it was good for her to try something new, as her target audience were growing up, she had to re -create something that would still appeal to the 16-24 age group. Similarly, I feel that our song choice would never go out of fashion and would still remain attractive to our target audience.

Planning: Fan site interaction

The blogger did not respond to my question as she thought it was a 'fake' or 'spam' question - taking her tumbler into consideration, I feel that Kate Nash relates to the blogger because she Nash has a strong sense in fashion and being out and about - which is probably the interests of the blogger too.
