Production: Nabilla J's Website

                                          http://nataliedasilva11.wix.com/nabillaj

As Nabilla J's music video is now complete, I thought it is time to make a website in which her fan base can know more about her and he personality. Considering that she is also a new artist on the block, her target audience would want to know more about how she got into the music industry and her view on the world around. I believe that this will increase her fan base and make her more popular due to her constant use of social networking and keeping her fan base updated. Enjoy lookingg at the site!

Production: Removed effects for music video

We have decided to remove effects that I said we were going to include due to the fact that it would appeal to our target audience and would be appropriate. We removed the three effects above as we compared the original footage and the footage we saturated it. We realized that the footage we saturated did not look attractive as we thought it would look. So therefore we lighted the dark footage at Banksy Coffee House which was successful. This was a similar scenario with the colour saturation. The only obvious edit we used was the split screen at the beginning. We thought it was appropriate as it introduced the music video, genre and Nabilla J.

PRODUCTION: EFECTS ON MUSIC VIDEO

In our beginning planning, we planned on using as many effects/filters as possible on our music video. As we've edited on final cut pro, we've realised that to overuse effects/filters would harm our music video and artist image; so we've decided to just use fast motion, slow motion, change the lighting slightly and to have a split screen at the beginning. Hopefully this makes our music video stand out as we haven't overused effects.

Production: Reflecting back on Editing

I thought today session in editing went really well.  Our group were full of ideas on how to complete the music video and add more footage of Nabilla J fooling around in front t of the camera. This allowed for us to take away the 'seriousness'of the lyrics and focus on the humor which will appeal more to our target audience. Furthermore, we were able to work on the split screen, which was quite difficult to handle due to the fact it  was new to us and we have never practiced split screen before, The YouTube tutorial helped us in how to construct the split screen. We also manged to come up with new ideas, one of which included showing the footage of Nabilla J taking pictures, and the pictures being seen one after the other in the music video. I am glad that we are almost finishing our music video, and we will prepare ourselves to fully complete are music video.

Editing: Reflecting back on Editing

During our editing session today, our group were able to structure our music video and finish splitting our base tracks. Along the way, we came across new ideas that we wanted to add in our music video which we didn't plan on doing in the beginning, for instance; adding camera shots that Nabilla J had taken. I think this worked really well, as our music video now gives of a playful atmosphere. Our group did come across some problems today in terms of picture locations going missing- but this was soon resolved. Our next lesson will be the day before our final deadline, which means were really going to have to concentrate and finish editing. So far, we have yet to include effects and filters and develop the split screen that introduces our music video.

Production: Editing for Final Music Video

As the deadline is this week, our group are now at the stage of finishing our music video. During today's lesson, we managed to cut all our footage and insert all our extra bits -including stop motion animation. Next lesson, we will begin using effects and filters in time to finish our music video by our deadline!

PRODUCTION: MISSING SHOTS

We have recently just almost finished filming, and although it has been stressful, its still been an ok experience. The only problem we've had is choosing what shots to include. As a result some of the shots we filmed are missing from the video which is quite sad, but the ones we've got will still work well in our music video.

Planning: Target Audience Interview on Kate Nash & Nabilla J

This interview will help me to shape a music video for Nabilla J according to the Naomi's thoughts on Kate Nash's music video. One thing I thought was interesting of what she said about Kate Nash's music video 'Foundations' was that depending on the mood of the song, the camera angles, mise-en-scene must match otherwise it will not make sense towards the Target audience. All her points were really interesting as she made good points about what Nabilla J's music video should look  like and where the location should be.

Production: Final Chosen effects for 'Foundations'

Using fade ins/outs provide a clear indication of moving from one scene to another appropriately and effectively. Obviously, to much use of fade ins and out in a music video will distribute the wrong type of message for a thriller type music video when the genre is completely different. It may become awkward  too and will be noticeable towards the audience, which is not a good thing. We will use fade ins/outs preferably  at the end of the music video to exit appropriately and in between stop motion animation and slow motion.

Using fast motion provides a sense of movement and is effective if used in an slow song to provide a balance of slow and fast camera movement and performer. We specifically used fat motion of Nabilla J dancing in order to create humor within a depressing break up song of Foundations.

PRODUCTION: SUCCESS WITH STOP MOTION

We have shown how our music video is so far and both our media teachers (MARY & DAN) have said that one of the main things they like is the stop motion animation we have added. We are pleased with their comments because when we first said we'd do it in our pitch, I think the teachers were a bit apprehensive that we would't be able to do it properly, BUT WE DID. Hopefully our target audience like this stop motion as well.

Production: Split Screen inclusion

We are going to include as split screen at the beginning of out music video (as indicated in the story bored). I think this will be effective as it will introduce the 'theme' of the music video, which is essential into attracting the right target audience. Each image on the split screen is vibrant and eye-catching, and reflect a different aspect in the music video e.g the Brick Lane logo represents a base track that will take place there.

Another music video which use split screen effectively is the Little Mix music video 'Wings'. This is also the first thing the audience see, and each image is also vibrant because of the colours and costume (make up) used. Each member represent a different personality and interest. In the first box, Jesy represents the urban era, with a fierce attitude because of her red hair. In the second box, Leigh Ann represents the old school 80s theme because of the vintage type of graffiti in the back ground, and tight, curly hair (which was the official 80's hairstyle). The third box with Jade represents the quirky vibe that are now become a popular trend. This is indicated through the black bow tie. And lastly, Pierre's box . The flowers may indicate her selfless personality and effortlessly sleek and sophisticated dress sense.

Planning/ Research: How can effects/ filters change our music video?

Having entered our editing process, its almost time we begin adding filters and effects to give our music video a more vibrant feel. Below I took a series of screenshots from a YouTube clip which demonstrate the difference an effect will do once it has been added. We have decided as a group to add saturation as our main effect to our music video.

This is clip from YouTube that I found where a man describes what an effect can do to a clip. He also shows us how to go about doing it on Final Cut Pro. Reflecting back on last years thriller, I had to also use the inclusion of filters as the footage would some times appear too dark, once it had been uploaded on to Final Cut Pro- this is the same issue we have had this year also with the Bansky Coffee House footage.

Production: Reflecting back on Rough cut editing

During class today our group worked on creating our rough cut. So far we have managed to sync all our base tracks with our track and have begun to cut footage and put it in accordance with our music video. Our rough cut deadline will be this Thursday, which means I will be working on it during lunch hours so that our rough cut will have a sense of what our final music video will look like. Overall, I'm particularly pleased with our stop motion animation on our cupcakes which has come across really well.

Production: JOY (quirky fashion store) follows me on Twitter

I found on twitter that the store JOY which I used to show the clothing range of Nabilla J's target audience for her gig follows me on twitter! This helps as it will allow me to interact with JOY, which will be beneficial in finding out more about who shops at JOY. Finding this out will help me to allocate our target audience.

Production: NOW 67 TV Ad with track 'Foundations'

I spotted this advert on youtube and thought I should post it. I spotted that the track 'Foundations' is amongst other pop songs which are globally succesfull and are targeatd at a range of people from teens to older adults. This is to strengthen all of the artits fanse base so that they do not only target a specific age group but a wide variety in order to maintain popluarity. With Nabilla J, although we target a specifi age group, we also try to target Nabilla J to males through Male magazies (NME).

Production: Target audience winter fashion

As winter makes its comeback once again, I thought it would be interesting to show what our target audience will be wearing to Nabilla J's winter gig (as stated in the website). This collection is from JOY which is a feminine brand target for young women aged 17 - 25, which is close with Nabilla J's target audience (16 -24) which suits all types of women. These outfits will appeal to our target audience because it is inspired by Nabilla J's I chose this selection of outfits because I believe our target audience will wear wear these types of clothes when going to see Nabilla J at her winter gig and is season appropriate   The Jumpers are very festive, and have the quirky edge to it with in terms of the colour and style. The trousers are very fitted and show off  the femininity of the female target audience. The wellington boots compliment the outfit and allow the female target audience to feel comfortable throughout the gig.

Editing: Split Screen Demonstration

The decision our group has decided to make is that the opening to our music video will be a slip screen which will appear in beat of our song. We decided to do this upon seeing another student video who also used "Foundations" as their A2 coursework. We found that the split screen worked really well, and took inspiration from this for our music video. As I have never come across making a slip screen on Final Cut Pro, I went on YouTube looking for tutorials, in which I came across the one below. I found this demonstration particularly useful and will use it during our final editing to create our split screen.

Research: Stop Motion Animation

The World’s Largest Stop Motion Animation : Nokia N8

Here we have the world’s largest stop motion animation which has all been recorded on a Nokia N8! The video above features a fisherman out at sea who is trying to catch fish, the fisherman then becomes the bait and gets eaten and is then exploded out. The backdrop of the clip is on a beach in South Wales, where the crew placed three phones placed around 36 meters above the ground to create the worlds record breaking largest stop motion animation.

Below is a clip as to what happened behind the scenes:

Now that the filming process is done, it is only a matter of time until we put together our own stop motion animation on Final Cut Pro for our music video.

Research: Stop Motion Animation

Stop Motion Animation
As I have analysed Kate Nash’s “Foundations” video in another blog post, I found that she uses stop motion animation. Stop motion animation is when you physically manipulate an object to make it appear as if it is moving on its own. In Kate Nash’s video you will find how she uses stop motion animation on a pair of socks:

Other examples of stop motion animation includes a clip taken from YouTube below:

In the Kinder clip, you will find how the wrapper from the egg is slowly being peeled away.  Then it looks as if the chocolate egg is slowly being eaten, until the yellow egg is left. The yellow egg then lets out the toy which soon becomes a toy car, followed up by a row of 3 Kinder eggs. What I like most about this stop motion animation is the way they have physically manipulated the egg into becoming a toy.

Our group have decided on also using stop motion animation in our music video. We are going to physically manipulate cupcakes and lemons. I also suggested we use a flip book, which contributes to the entire stop motion animation theme.

Editing: Thoughts on rough cut edit

As we have concluded our filming, we are now in the process of creating a rough cut which will demonstrate the basis of our final music video. Firstly, what I realised about editing a music video is how different it is to editing a thriller (which we did last year). I found it extremely difficult to get the artist in synch with our chosen song. Our group found that, our artist was slightly off when mouthing the lyrics to the song, but soon began singing in time with the song again, which means were going to use only the parts when she is in synch with the song. We also had a problem with locating some footage we had taken, but soon recovered the lost footage again. As the editing process got harder, our group began losing concentration. Despite this, I believe we are still in a good position to have a rough cut ready in time for class on Tuesday. Having received some help from the media technicians, I was able to demonstrate my ability to use markers on sound and footage and how to edit footage according to the beat.

Research: Kate Nash "FRI-END?"

As I have mentioned in my slide share before, Kate Nash has created a new extended play. One of her singles from it is called "FRI-END?" Nash created a music video especially for Halloween for this track, which demonstrates a fun and excited atmosphere. In the music video they have recreated a Buffy episode "Once More with Feeling". The track is free and shows a glimpse of how the new EP will appear to be.

Production: Thoughts on First day of 'Editing'

I thought today's first lesson of editing was challenging . Despite the tutorial in lesson we had of lip syncing, I did not practice enough on how to lip sync successfully. Thankfully I managed to sync all our base track, and I am ready to edit our final music video professionally. Here is an overview of the good points and bad points I experienced  while constructing our Rough Cut.

Good points:

.We worked as a group and helped each other to decide on what parts to cut and what parts to use in our timeline

. We have left yourself enough time to compete our rough cut before the deadline and plan in advance what effects and edits to use in constructing our final music video.

.I helped managed the lip syncing and placed all the base tracks in order as desired

.I missed lunch to aid us to complete the rough  cut -which shows my determination

Bad points:

. I began panicking because some of the footage were miss placed

. The lip syncing was challenging because we could hear the audio when played on final cut, so had to look at the lip movement of Nabilla J to match the track.

. We had alot of 'extra' footage and  which was tricky when we were doing our rough cut as we filmed some footage halfway through the song, which delayed our time.

. I was hungry and tired which made me loose concentration towards the end of our lesson

Production: Rough Cut editing

Having finished all our filming, its now time our group finally put together a rough cut to what our music video will appear to be. Below are a series of images that show our group using Final Cut Pro and forming the structure of our rough cut. We managed to organize our footage and allocate them into each folder according to location of filming. Furthermore, we place all our base tracks onto the timeline and sync the music in time with our footage. After a tiring 3 and a half hours, we are ready to move on to editing our rough cut and sorting out which order to place certain footage.

PRODUCTION: REFLECTING ON EDITING

So we've just started our editing and it seems to be going well...but we know it is going to get harder. We've laid our base tracks down and are sorting out the rest of our little clips. I think one of our difficulties will be choosing what little clips we want to add into the music video. We have to keep in mind who are target audience are at all times.

Production: Student Work Influence

So I was going through Vimeo to get more inspirations on how to make the music video unique and creative. In this student music video, there is alot of obvious edits used to re-create a funky theme. Furthermore,  the video has altered its colour settings and used bright bold colours to reflect the performer's ego - as a confident , independent lady.  In the same basis, I will aim to use numerous obvious edits to re-create a quirky theme and (as I mentioned before in the previous post) to re-create a vintage theme and portray a ascentric persona of Nabilla J.

I choose these two shots as a central focus points because I thing they both demonstrate a great use of Final Cut Pro effects and obvious edits (Carol Vernallis theory). It also shows that this group that edited this music video thought carefully in how they would portray this character - I believe they wished to portray her as a confident female, the girl thats everyone wants to be like Beyonce or Kelly Rowland. I would say that we portrayed Nabilla J as a down-to-earth local girl where the target audience can relate with her.

Production: Possible effects for Final Music video

I have been going through YouTube to find out more about creating an effective, striking and original  video. I really want to use effects that will transform our average shots into something exciting. I came past this video that is a tutorial which shows how to clone objects and show interaction between the two. This will fit with the theme of our music video of mockery. I want to keep away as far as possible from the cliche music video with the basic edits (as shown in the lip syncing post). I will practice this method and see how the end results turn out. In the tutorial video below, it shows how to change the settings of the still image video. This will allow us to create a quirky and vintage look to our music video. I did not learn these effects in AS and want to use this opportunity to include as many appropriate edits as possible to show off our skills we learnt over this course.

Production: Costume change!

Our group planned, that our artist will be wearing a bowler hat as part of costume to provide the vintage theme to our song. However, this has been changed and unfortunately will no longer be added to our music video, as we didn't have enough time to find the right one.

Production: Thoughts on Coursework so far

1. Critical

I have been very critical with my own work in order to adapt from my mistakes and create more effective blog posts. Critics can also come from my teacher, in order to obtain maximum advice and suggestions which will enable me to create a more effective music video and blog posts to back it up.

2. Motivation

In order to achieve high marks, I have kept my motivation levels high which is mirrored in my blog posts. After a disappointing overall mark in AS media, this has motivated me to aim achieve the best possible grades.

3. Determined

Motivation alone will not be enough to fully prepare myself for the blogging course. My determination for this coursework allows me to blog more frequently, and be more reflective in terms of progress and create an original and unique blog overall.

4.Organised

Organisation is the key element in passing or failing this course. It is quite difficult to keep organised as part of a group, as other members may effect my organisation causing unnecessary delays. To avoid such drama, I have decided to blog whether something went wrong and explain fully, in order to recognize a fault and resolve it.

5.Planned well

I have maintained my planning for the production of making the music video clear, and in chronological order. I always go back to my previous blogs to make sure there is not major spelling fault or unclear blogs. Furthermore, I am always on the look out of anything that inspired my music video and I will blog about it making sure it links with the creation of  the music video

Production: Nabilla J Twitter Update

When I logged on back on to Nabilla J's Twitter account, I found that she had gained 3 followers overnight, Including a verified account who also is in the music industry! It's great that the artist is willing to follow Nabilla J as they may want to comment on the final cut of the music video, which will include as part  of our evaluation. I will keep tweeting for Nabilla J and hopefully more followers will follow Nabilla J, especially those within our target audience range.

Production: Filming schedule

Above is a calender which shows our filming schedule. Our group weren't able to film on Friday and Saturday and were only able to film New River Walk on Sunday, which mean't we had to use our class time as extra filming days. Luckily, within these days we were able to go to all our locations and get enough footage for our music video.

Filming: Reflecting back on fourth day of filming

GREEN SCREEN ROOM AND INTERACTIVE BOARD

Our fourth day of filming meant filming within college by using the media department and their equipment. At first we were going to use the green screen but soon realised the projector on the interactive board worked much better. On the projector we projected a normal blue background while putting sticky notes on the board, which contained smiley faces and phrases. Overall, this idea worked really and will also appeal to our target audience. During this filming session, we also filmed our "rose blooming" sequence from Youtube and the flipbook, which contributes to our stop animation. Our filming session, lasted only one hour which meant our group were becoming more and more familiar with the filming methods. As we filmed indoors, we didn't face any problems only that the camera shadow would appear in the shot (which we quickly resolved).

PRODUCTION: DAY FOUR: MEDIA DEPARTMENT

Our fourth and final day of filming was great and by far the funest(?). We filmed in the media department at college, in the same room as the Green Screen. We were going to film in the Green Screen at first but we learned how difficult it was going to be so opted to film against the interactive white board instead. This is the day where were we're the most creative, we decided to stick colourful sticky notes onto the white board to give it a studio type of feel. We wrote words like 'FASHION, VINTAGE, ROCK N' ROLL, BITCH ETC' which we thought goes with our genre and artist image. It was really fun as we vibed off the colourful environment we were in. We also shot the rose scene in that room which was fun.

Production: Colour Saturation

how to make gifs

Here are some examples of colour saturation that I have put together. As we are going down the quirky, vintage route, I thin it will be best to change the saturation of the footage, to achieve the best results of a vintage music video. I thought It would be best to try out these settings with a cupcake, and then with one of the footage we shot. Its all about attracting our target audience, so therefore using colour saturation will be one key to achieve this old school look. Just by changing the the saturation already creates a change of  era, atmosphere etc. This will give us the great Idea of changing the saturation if the music video to create a vintage feel - despite our fail into achieving a vintage feel of the costume.

Production: The making of Nabilla J's Official Website

Here is a snapshot of the website I'm creating for Nabilla J. It has the quirky edge too it and the saturation of the template highlights the vintage feel to the website. Has the website design is not mainstream, this will instantly attract the audience to the website. It may give them ideas in how to construct there own website to achieve the same look. Stay tuned!

Production: Nabilla J on Twitter

As I have mentioned numerous times, our target audience are internet users and social networking. In order to fully advertise Nabilla J, she too must have a strong use of the social media. Saying that, I have made Nabilla J a twitter account so that she can expose her hidden talent. The layout of the Twitter account is a vintage picture of a Porfirio camera. Similarly, Kate Nash's template is also vintage, however, she uses a picture of herself in vintage clothing. I believe Nabilla J's account will look attractive towards the target audience as they too have an interest in vintage and quirkiness.

Here is the link to Nabilla J's Twitter account: https://twitter.com/NabillaJ1

I am currently making Nabilla J's website with all the tour dates and so on, to really create Nabilla J as an artist that I always out and about, touring, doing meets-and-greet etc.

Filming: Reflecting back on third day of filming

THE BANKSY COFFEE HOUSE +  BRICK LANE

Our third day of filming took place during a media session, in which our group had to email our teacher beforehand to let him know we wouldn't be attending class, as "The Banksy Coffee House" was only available to us from 8:30am to 10:00am. Instead, we all headed straight to the cafe to film when it was at its least busiest. The props we used on the day were  LEMONS and cupcakes, the lemons were used as they are mentioned in our music video and the cupcakes were used as part of our stop animation. The atmosphere of the cafe, fit well with our music video as it had a vintage feel with posters covering every inch of the walls, which had little quotes and quirky slogans on them.

When filming in the cafe had wrapped up, we left straight for Brick Lane. The problems that we faced in Brick Lane was finding a secluded area, as it was busy during the afternoon. Eventually, after searching for half an hour we managed to find the right place to film, which consisted of a vibrant graffiti brick wall. Overall, both locations fit extremely well with our music video and our target audience.

Planning: Website for Nabilla J

As I have come half  way through in completing A2 media coursework for the music video, I thought it would be a good Idea to start thinking about the Digi packs. I found websites that will help us enhance Nabilla J's internet use and to connection with fans. It will also broaden her fan base and make her popular within the Indie-pop genre. These are the websites:

http://www.wix.com/ - To create Nabilla J's personal website

https://twitter.com/ - To create an account where she can instantly communicate with fans

http://www.facebook.com/ - To create an account where she can instantly communicate with fans

http://www.dafont.com/- Fonts to use in order to distribute Nabilla J's logo professionally

I will upload examples of these following websites shortly, so that you can get a theme of what Nabilla J's theme is like. Without any of these websites, Nabilla J will not be a successful as if we were to promote her though the online media. As most of her fan base will be current uses of the internet, they will be able to access Nabilla J's online world.

Filming: Reflecting back on second day of filming

NEW RIVER WALK - CANONBURY GROVE

During half term, our group scheduled a day to film our shots at "New River Walk". This location was our back up, if we weren't able to film at Regents Park (which became the case). On the day, our group began filming in the afternoon, and filmed a variety of footage near the river, bridge and hut. Due to weather conditions, our artist kept her coat on while filming even though it wasn't part of costume. We found that the coat allowed an edgier feel. While at location, we saw different things we wanted to include in our music video like filming the ducks in the pond and the artist filming herself handheld. What I learnt on this day was to dress up warm when filming for long hours!

PRODUCTION: CHANGE OF COSTUME

On our second day of filming, it was so cold that we had to have a change of costume. We just added a khaki green parka jacket to the costume which wasn't intended but, still went with our genre and attracted our target audience. The weather has effected much of our filming and we've had to learn to adapt to the change. Hopefully this shows well in our music video.

PRODUCTION: DAY TWO: NEW RIVER WALK

Day two of filming was done on a surprisingly cold day. We didn't realise how cold it was going to be on that day but we powered through it anyway. We went to NEW RIVER WALK PARK, in Islington to film for about 2 hours. We got all of our base tracks done (well the ones we planned to film that day). We had some trouble with other people who didn't seem to realise we were filming...and little kids who were interested in what we were doing. We filmed in 3 locations in the park: the hut/pond bank, the rocks and on the bridge. The bridge was my favourite since we were quite creative in how we filmed. Overall, the day of filming was good, it was just the lovely British weather that damped our day.

Planning: Flip Book Permission

Our group previously had to get in touch with Nathan Allen who created the flip book we saw on YouTube, because we wanted to use his flip book idea. We thought it would only be right to ask permission first, in which he responded- that we could go ahead and use it.

Planning: Flip book permission

Our group have decided on including a flip book, which will be part of our stop motion animation motif. We have used YouTube in order to find a flip book that will be best suited for our music video, in which we found the one seen below.

Because we will be using their flip book as inspiration, we thought we should ask permission before we use their idea.

Production: Preparation for 2nd day of filming

So, as I have mentioned previously, organisation is key to complete any task, big or small. So here are a few things that will allow me to be prepared for the New River Walk shoot.

1. Filming Equipment

I know this sounds obvious, but double checking the equipment is in place will avoid unnecessary delays.

2. Dress warmly

With this unpredictable weather, its best to check the weather in advanced so that I wont freeze to death. A woolly coat and trainers will do.

3. Spare change

Its always handy to bring spare change with me maybe to eat between shooting break, buy things within our budget or top up to call the other members from my group £5 should be more than enough.

and most importantly: My Umbrella!

Planning: Weather Forecast for the weekend

To maintain organisation starts with whether the actual filming day for us will be suitable. As you can see in the first picture, there are specific times to what the temperature and settings will be like  As we are beginning our filming at 12:00 pm, the overall temperature will be good enough to film comfortably, as well as entering in to the early hours of the after noon. There is predicted rain during the evening, but we will have finished our filming production for our locations (New River Walk)

To be on the safe side, I have print screened these satellite pictures to show the exact temperature for my location. As New River Walk is in N1 (Islington borough), the predicted temperature will be 10 degrees. The red circles on the third picture  shows the blue arrow that I used to change the time on Sunday to find out whether the temperature will remain the same or not.
