Carol
Vernallis studied editing and camerawork and summarised her own findings of
what a music video appears to be.
- She found that continuity editing is broken in order to draw attention to what is on the screen
- Jump cuts are often used
- Edits are used to be obvious in terms of transitions and special effects
- A base track is the main part of the music video to give it structure and frequently appears throughout the music video
- Camera stays in sync with the music
An example of Vernallis's theory is the music video to Countdown by Beyonce, you will find many of her suggestions of what a music video should be are shown constantly in Beyonce's music video
Vernallis
also identifies that many music videos stand out as disjuncture, when the music
video has no connection to the lyrics of the song.
